When I joined the Castaic Area Town Council (CATC) we were cash poor. At that time all the
organizations had a fundraiser. My oldest daughter at the time was running a lot of local 5k
I suggested the run as a fundraiser to the CATC and we "ran" with it. I wanted the run to
a family community event as at that time we were lacking in that area. I focused on number of
runners and not so much "large" sponsors. Our first year in 1997 we had about 200 runners and
my last year of organizing the run we had over 500 runners.
In these years all proceeds went to
the CATC, Lions Club and the Castaic Education Foundation. All runners received a free pancake
breakfast after the run. All the kids in the 1k fun run got a medal and we broke the awards for
the 5k run by 5 year age groups in order to award more runners. We had the girl scouts and boy
scouts stuffing bags and manning water stations, the Castaic Middle School Choir and Band
always opened the festivities with performing the Star Spangled Banner. It was truly a
We received many compliments on our course and it attracted elite runners from
all of Santa Clarita. This run would have never come off though if it were not for the County
of Los Angeles helping with the parking fees at Castaic Lake and our early years title sponsors
Ampco Parking Systems and Northlake.
